SJHN Daily: Karlsson Pens Heartfelt Tribute to Alfredsson
Daniel Alfredsson means a lot to Erik Karlsson.
So much so, the San Jose Sharks star penned a heartfelt tribute to his friend, on the eve of Alfredsson’s induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame last night.

Karlsson broke into the NHL as a teenager in 2009-10 with the Ottawa Senators, and Alfredsson, long-time captain of Sens, took his fellow Swede under his wing.
One of the best stories from Karlsson’s tribute was from Dec. 2014, after Karlsson had taken over as Senators captain. Ottawa had just re-signed the 41-year-old Alfredsson to a one-day contract so he could retire a Senator.
“The day he retired as a Senator in 2014, the whole night was supposed to be about him,” Karlsson wrote. “But I remember getting to the rink and all his boys were wearing my jersey. Not their dad’s — mine. I had just become the captain a few months earlier, and I knew that Alfie meant it as a gesture to everyone. As if to say, My time is done, let’s get behind Erik and the team. Even up to his very last day as a Senator, he still had my back.”
This is just one of many wonderful stories that Karlsson told about Alfredsson in the Player’s Tribune, including Karlsson being there when Alfredsson got the call from the Hockey Hall of Fame.
