Why Sharks Fans Should Be Thankful for Karlsson Trade Rumors

Sheng Peng: Happy early Thanksgiving!

Speaking of things to be thankful for, all San Jose Sharks fans, love him or hate him, should be thankful for Erik Karlsson trade rumors.

Here’s why: Any way you cut it, the reason why there are Karlsson trade rumors is that he’s playing so well. He’s putting up historical numbers so far this season, Bobby Orr, Paul Coffey stuff.

If he was playing half as well, trust me, there’d be ZERO interest around the league for a 32-year-old defenseman with four more years left in his contract after this season at an $11.5 million dollar cap hit per year.

There haven’t been a lot of Karlsson trade rumors for the last few years for that exact reason.

Instead, you have front offices around the league saying on one hand, Erik Karlsson is older and he’s very expensive, but on the other hand, he’s still looking like a true difference-maker.

That’s tempting for teams that think they’re close to winning a Stanley Cup.

So if you’re a Karlsson fan, be thankful for all the trade talk, because it wouldn’t be happening unless Karlsson was playing great hockey.

And if you don’t like Erik Karlsson, be thankful too, because he’s finally playing well enough that for the first time since he signed his eight-year, $92 million dollar extension in 2019, he actually appears to be tradeable.

I want Erik to stay in teal. Losing his talent would leave a chasm we’d probably wait for years to fill again.

Ty Comes

Absolutely agree. We would be sooo dogshit for years

I say trade EK65 and Meier, get all the prospects and draft picks you can. Build the team around Hertl, Ferraro, Eklund, Bordeleau, and this year’s 1st round draft picks.

Bordeleau, Eklund, and any 1st round picks are a hail mary more than a strategy. Most 1st round picks don’t pan out. Even #1 overalls can be hit-and-miss. Hertl is a bonafide 1st line center. But Ferraro has been playing below expectations this season. You might consider a different strategy that has a little less risk involved.

Keep Karlsson if you plan on Contending in the next 3 years. Otherwise grab assets for whoever another team will take minus Hertl and anyone under 25 (unless the return is too much to pass on). On Mier, I think trading Mier works perfectly for tanking the next two years and bouncing back strong with the prospects we already have and who we pick up in the next 2 drafts. (My dream Scenario is Fantilli and Kiviharju). Trade Mier to Boston for Mason Lohrei a 1rst this year and a 2nd that turns into a first is he resigns. If… Read more »

this team isn’t a SC contender within 3 years. even when the young stars are ready for the NHL, they’ll need a few seasons to come into their own. an NHL rebuild is 4 years. gotta draft, develop, and then mature the NHL game. not to suggest you shouldn’t be integrating these players into your NHL line up earlier, it just takes time for them to emerge (unless a generational type player) as an NHL star (or superstar) player. Meier is that tweener age for me. he could be part of the longer term solution, but i don’t think he’s… Read more »

I personally don’t care if he stays or goes just wish quit talking about it

it’s newsworthy, so whatya expect? everyone knows how you feel already, lol!

I’m going to agree with KE here, even though we certainly don’t agree on Karlsson. The Sharks still need to put butts in seats and get season ticket holders to renew. If you fire sale the team, they will be in rough shape for a long time. The Sharks aren’t good, but I’m having fun watching EK and Meier at least. It’s still worth the price of admission

Mr Epstein

If EK65 gives a darn about his hockey legacy he should engineer a trade out of San Jose. Little hope for anything positive by remaining. SJS will need to eat part of his salary but it would be best for all parties.
