Preview/Lines #5: Emberson To Make NHL Debut

NASHVILLE – Ty Emberson’s mom Missy and grandmother Karen’s road trip just happens to be around the area, so they’re going be there for Emberson’s NHL debut at Bridgestone Arena tonight.

The 23-year-old defenseman, claimed off waivers from the New York Rangers last month, got the news today that he’s in the San Jose Sharks line-up.

“They’re just driving from Wisconsin to Florida for the winter,” Emberson said. “My grandparents live down there.

“Just coincidence that we ended up being on the way. I think they’re somewhere in probably Illinois right now.”

Emberson’s fiancée Carolyn is also flying in from San Jose.

Unfortunately, Emberson’s father Mike and grandfather Denny won’t make it.

“Just with the travel, short notice, him and my dad are at the cabin [in Wisconsin] right now,” Emberson reported.

It’s especially unfortunate that Denny Zacho won’t be there.

Zacho, who played for the University of Minnesota from 1964 to 1967, is the one who got Emberson into the sport.

“My dad never played, my family never really played,” Emberson said. “He was the one who got us into hockey and he’s been there through it all. He’s been a big mentor for us.”

Denny Zacho will get a chance, and soon, to watch his grandson play in the NHL, at least if Emberson plays up to head coach David Quinn’s expectations.

“One of the reasons we took him [from the Rangers] is he can defend, he can make an outlet pass, and he’s got good gaps, that’s really all we’re asking him to do,” Quinn said.
