SJHN Daily: Leon Gawanke Signs With Sharks
The San Jose Sharks signed defenseman Leon Gawanke to a one-year, two-way contract.
Per Puckpedia, Gawanke will make $775,000 in the NHL, $325,000 in the AHL.
The German defenseman did have a contract in place to return to Europe for this coming season, however, he had an out in that contract should he sign an NHL deal before July 15.
The San Jose Sharks acquired Gawanke in a prospect swap for 2019 second-round pick Artemi Kniazev. Gawanke, a 2017 fifth-rounder, tallied 20 goals and 45 points in 68 games for the Manitoba Moose last season in the AHL.
The 6-foot-2, right-handed defenseman will be part of a training camp battle with the likes of Henry Thrun and Nick Cicek looking to secure NHL minutes. At both the NHL and AHL levels, the Sharks could also use his offensive ability to help quarterback their power play.
