SJHN Daily: Marleau Learning to Live Without NHL in Florida
The Marleaus have moved to Florida in order to help their son’s NHL aspirations, but Patrick is still involved with hockey.
While he never skated in an NHL game during the 2021-22 season, Patrick Marleau’s retirement was not officially announced until Marleau himself did so in The Players’ Tribune last May.
In an exclusive with The Athletic, Marleau shed light on the struggles he’s faced in retirement: “My whole life has been hockey, hockey, hockey. That’s how you identify, that’s what you do.” He grappled with “trying to find (out), what’s the next step, or what’s your next passion?”
In order to help the chances of their oldest son, Landon, making the NHL, the family moved to take part in a Florida hockey program actually run by former Shark Shawn Heins. Patrick has become an assistant coach for his eldest’s under-16 hockey team and head coach for son Jagger’s under-12 club.
The San Jose Sharks legend has not ruled out a potential return to the NHL as a coach or scout, but has other priorities at the moment.
