Meier, Sharks’ Contract Negotiations: ‘Nothing Significant’ Going On

“You’re just warming me up?” Timo Meier laughed. “Asking me the tough questions?”

I was joking with the pending RFA that I was checking in on his contract negotiations this morning to prepare him for the media onslaught that he could face on the San Jose Sharks’ upcoming road trip through Canada.

“I think there’s nothing significant,” Meier reported of contract negotiations between his camp and Sharks GM Mike Grier.

This is in line with what his agent Claude Lemieux told San Jose Hockey Now before the season: “We have not received any offers yet, and don’t expect anything until the end of the season.”

Agent: Meier Doesn’t Expect Offer from Sharks Until After Season

San Jose Hockey Now hasn’t heard of any change from that status quo – it still feels like the ball is in the San Jose Sharks’ court. San Jose could also opt to trade the high-octane winger before the Mar. 3 Trade Deadline.

“It’s in your head sometimes,” Meier admitted, “but you try to not get too caught up with it.”

The 26-year-old winger, to his credit, doesn’t look too caught up with it.

After going without a goal in his first nine games this season, Meier has been on a tear recently, scoring 12 goals and seven assists in his last 13 contests. He is now the San Jose Sharks’ goal scoring leader.

“The focus right now for me is to play, play hard, play my best hockey,” he offered. “Obviously, we’re not winning a lot of hockey games. I’m trying to become better, better for the team, and make sure we win more games.”
