SJHN Daily: Teams Interested in Trading for Kahkonen?

Hopefully, this won’t be another Adin Hill situation.
With the expected departure of UFA James Reimer this offseason, Kaapo Kakhonen is the only goalie on the San Jose Sharks’ roster with more than a few games of NHL experience. Yet, he clocked in at No. 24 on the recent Daily Faceoff Trade Targets board.
Frank Seravalli writes, “There are a few teams that view Kahkonen as a worthy rehab project and think he can bounce back into being a quality NHL netminder next season and beyond. They think he has the tools to be an immediate No. 1 again.”
It is worth noting, however, that Seravalli believes San Jose is open to trading a large number of their players: “The Sharks are open to anything and everything to improve. If that means someone comes calling on Kahkonen, then so be it.”
Erik Karlsson and Kevin Labanc also appears on the Trade Targets board.
Since being acquired with a 2022 fifth-round pick for Jake Middleton during the 2022 Trade Deadline, Kakhonen has not been able to solidify himself as a starting goalie. Despite showing promise in an 11-game sample with San Jose in 2021-22, Kakhonen’s 2022-23 season saw him sport a 3.85 GAA and .883 Save% in 37 games.
Eetu Makiniemi, as reported by San Jose Hockey Now, is expected to return next season. The San Jose Sharks also have prospects Magnus Chrona and Georgy Romanov under contract for next season. However, none of these youngsters are expected to take on a large NHL role next season.
The San Jose Sharks were also recently linked to Philadelphia Flyers’ goaltender Carter Hart, though that seems far-fetched.
If the Sharks were to deal Kahkonen, they would certainly need to add a goalie or two this off-season.
