SJHN Daily: Habs Trying to Trade for Sharks’ No. 4 Pick?

Could the San Jose Sharks trade down?

Today, The Athletic’s Arpon Basu confirmed that the Montreal Canadiens have looked into trading up from their fifth-overall pick. Radio Canada’s Alexandre Gascon first reported that the Habs contacted the San Jose Sharks about their fourth-overall pick. But, it looks like the Habs are thinking about a more aggressive move.

“The Canadiens have also contacted the Anaheim Ducks to see what it would take to move up to No. 2,” wrote Basu. “The cost would likely be astronomical to get from No. 5 to No. 2, but when a player like Adam Fantilli is available, doing your due diligence to determine that cost is a necessity.”

Consensus No. 2 Fantilli probably won’t be there for the Sharks’ pick though, so the Canadiens could have their sights set on Leo Carlsson or Will Smith, favorites to go third and fourth-overall.

For what it’s worth, according to Dom Luszczyszyn’s Draft pick value chart, moving from No. 5 to No. 4 should also cost Montreal an extra third-round pick, at least:

The Canadiens do have the No. 69 pick in the third round. They also have No. 31 in the first round and No. 37 in the second.

If the San Jose Sharks were to agree to a pick swap, who would they choose at No. 5? Matvei Michkov? David Reinbacher?
