Kyle, Erik, and JD take stock of where the San Jose Sharks stand going into the expansion draft. It’s got to be Dahlen for me. I think Gambrell could be a great 4C going forward, but even with the questions marks, the upside for Dahlen makes protecting him–with his upside, which this team is desperate for–a no-brainer for me.
I would be shocked if they didn’t protect Dahlen after all the investment that they’ve made for him. Just was a good thought exercise to try and figure out who they need to protect/expose.
what investment? they gave up Linus Karlsson for him. i think they’ve put more into Gambrel. however, Dahlen is younger and hasn’t dashed expectations as of yet (unlike Gambrel).
While they only swapped prospects, they’ve invested a lot of time and effort to make sure he is comfortable and ready to contribute when he feels that he is. A lot of teams probably wouldn’t have said just go play in Europe until you are ready to come over.
i get they’ve been patient with him. i’m not sure that equates to much investment. they’ve had other wingers to look at during that time, so not much of a rush. i don’t know. i used to be hyped on Dahlen, but his development has stagnated imo. the last 2 seasons in the Swedish beer league isn’t a guy pushing himself to be better. it’s playing big fish in little pond. not that i’m anybody he has to prove anything to, but as a fan, i ain’t holding my breath. say what you want about Gambrell (and much has been… Read more »
It’s a fair point on Gambrell, but yea, Dahlen has the upside in his favor. You know what Gambrell is, and he’s likely replaceable. I would guess Dahlen is who they protect.
do you know of any other player with a contract like Dahlen’s? i search by comparable contract on CF and every player on that list has a 2-way deal. when i search by 1-way contracts the only player who pops up is Nolan Patrick and he’s a full-time proven NHL’er.
buyouts begin 48 hrs after SC final and end on June 30th iirc. see ya Joner!
