If you could choose one stat, and only one stat, to evaluate all hockey players, what would it be?
“If you’re going to ask me about value for a player, and I had to pick one statistic, it would be time on ice. Because coaches know to play good players,” ex-Minnesota Wild lead hockey researcher Andrew C. Thomas told Craig Custance in a 2019 episode of “The Full 60” podcast.
It’s not a perfect statistic, but time on ice does tell an undeniably important story, which is why I seek it out every year for the San Jose Barracuda. The AHL does not track icetime on their website.
