Nolan, Clowe, Ward, Scott Thornton, Marleau on What They’re Up To, What’s Next

The San Jose Sharks held media availability before their Legends Game at Tech CU Arena on Friday.

San Jose Hockey Now was able to catch up with all-time great Sharks like Scott Thornton, Owen Nolan, Ryane Clowe, Joel Ward, and of course, the man of the hour himself, Patrick Marleau, and find out what they’re up to these days.

“I went back to Ontario, Canada, and retired back there. I have a couple of businesses going on back there, and not playing hockey too much. Just some beer league stuff once in a while to keep the legs sharp,” Scott Thornton said.

Thornton resides in Blue Mountain, Ontario, and told SJHN that one of his businesses is a resort called Scandinave. He mentioned that he’s entered his 17th year with the resort.

“I’m actually working with the New York Rangers. I’ve been there a couple of years, and I feel good,” Ryane Clowe told SJHN. “I obviously enjoyed the coaching [side] when I was done, but [enjoying] this side as well. Health feels good.”

In 2018, Clowe was named the head coach of the ECHL‘s Newfoundland Growlers, but because of concussion after effects from his playing career, he couldn’t continue in that role. He is now a hockey advisor for the Blueshirts.

“My son’s playing down in Los Angeles, so just sitting in the stands, being a dad, watching and being a fan,” Owen Nolan said. “We’re just renting down there for the season [to] see how it goes. He’s enjoying it. I’m enjoying it. It’s a lot of fun.”

Nolan was one of the San Jose Sharks’ first stars. A power forward who could score, Nolan told SJHN that for his 16-year-old son Dylan to become a brute force like him, the youngster would need to put on a few pounds.

Joel Ward was another fan favorite in San Jose. He was a part of the 2016 Stanley Cup Final run but now is an assistant coach for the AHL’s Henderson Silver Knights.

“I love it. For me as a player, I learned so much from the coaches that I had and former players. It would be a shame if I just kept all the information to myself. So, for me, that teaching aspect of it is huge. I enjoy every minute of it,” Ward said of his life after the Sharks.

“Sometimes I get a little too aggressive out there. Sometimes I feel like I’m still out there as a player,” he laughed. “It feels like you’re part of the team again.”

Ward was very thankful for the fact that he was able to make it out to such a special weekend honoring Mr. Shark Patrick Marleau.

“We still have our house here,” the-now Florida resident Marleau told SJHN. “There’s a good chance we’ll be back.”
