SJHN Daily: William Eklund on Victor’s AHL Debut, Reaves Wants To Return Next Year, Arm Swing Mechanics in Skating

There’s another Eklund making waves in North American hockey.

San Jose Sharks’ forward William Eklund’s younger brother Victor Eklund — who was drafted No. 16 overall by the New York Islanders — was assigned to the Bridgeport Islanders this week.

“It’s really fun for him, it’s a good experience for him coming over here and seeing how the game works here on the smaller surface,” William said. “So far, so good, he’s been doing really good, so really proud of him.”

And Victor made an impact immediately, scoring the game-winning shootout goal.

William said he hasn’t seen the particular move Victor scored on from him before, but that it was nifty and a “hell of a shot.”

William said he watches Victor as much as he can, including the two games he’s played so far for Bridgeport.

“He’s been doing really good things,” William said. “He’s learning how to play this game, it’s a different type of game. But so far he’s been really good. You can see how much hockey he has in him and he’s going to keep doing that.”

William also passed on some wisdom from his own experience in the AHL, playing for the San Jose Barracuda.

He played 54 games in the AHL in the 2022-23 season — his first in North America.

“It’s patience in the AHL” William said. “You’re so eager to get up and get to play in the NHL, but you’ve got to have some patience sometimes and keep doing your thing everyday and eventually it’s going to get you results.”

Sheng mentioning Delly to be available during the homestand, but I don’t see anyone he should be supplanting in the current starting lineup. Huge eye roll if Misa sits in favor of Delly.

I agree with you on this. I think the team signed Delly to be the 13th or 14th forward the next couple years and that’s probably what he is now. Maybe somebody gets a rest to get him in, but I’ve actually been liking the 3rd and 4th lines lately, so I’m assuming he’s mostly healthy scratched

What does everyone think of the idea of trading William Eklund for Adam Pelech and a draft pick in the offseason?

As a fan, I wanna see brothers play together. For the Sharks, it’s a win now (in the next three years) move, and for the Islanders, it’s a solid addition for the future.

Pelech is an elite, veteran shutdown defenseman that the Sharks have needed all year.

Eklund is a young, crafty top-6 forward who can be a core part of the Islander’s team for years.

Lucas

It’s a no for me. Pelech is a good shutdown defenseman but he’s too old to give up Eklund for me.

Mac Dawg

Ok that’s reasonable. What if it’s Pelech and a 1st?

BryanMirkley6

I would think of it the other way around. The sharks could probably get a top 4 defenseman with plenty of miles left for Eklund and Edmonton’s 1st. If you’re going to use a big chip like Eky, I think it has to be for a longterm piece that fills a hole on the roster. Would Vancouver take that package for Hronek? Maybe, and that makes the sharks a better team immediately. If they also acquire one of Whitecloud, Kovacevic, or Kesselring to fill out a defense core of Orlov-Hronek, Dickinson-?, and Mukh-Pohlkamp/Desharnais, I think that’s a playoff team, and… Read more »
