San Jose still holds Chmelevski’s rights. Chmelevski, 24, last played for the Sharks in the 2021-22 season. The center has notched 10 assists in 24 NHL games over parts of two seasons.
Since leaving San Jose after 2021-22, Chmelevski has registered 91 points in 117 games for Salavat.
“He’s a real game-changer [for them] right now. He’s made the team better in every way,” a Russia-based NHL scout told San Jose Hockey Now. “I’ve heard that he’s happy playing in Russia. Good team, good city, good ice-time can do wonders.”
At this time, it’s not clear if the Sharks themselves would be interested in bringing back the 6-foot-o center. His KHL contract expires after this season.
The Vancouver Canucks, according to Rick Dhaliwal, are among the teams interested.
