Reimer on His Faith, Not Getting Traded, New Mask Details
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
That Biblical verse, Joshua 1:9, referenced in the back of James Reimer’s new away mask, might well have been the goalie’s mantra as trade rumors swirled around him this summer.
After the San Jose Sharks traded for Kaapo Kahkonen last Trade Deadline, they had three NHL-caliber goalies on their roster, Reimer, Kahkonen, and Adin Hill. Somebody had to go.
It was San Jose Hockey Now’s understanding that Reimer was on the block this summer, but the Sharks had a high price for the affable veteran who emerged as their best goalie last year:
The 34-year-old netminder, wife April, and two kids are thrilled that another team didn’t meet the price: “We really enjoyed it last year. This year, our kids are in grade school, and we’ve got some friends over here.”
Instead, the San Jose Sharks sent Hill to the Vegas Golden Knights for a 2024 fourth-round pick last month, clearing the crease:
Were there any sleepless nights for Reimer this off-season, waiting for the ax to fall?
“I don’t know if anybody ever really feels secure in this league. I mean, just ask [Jonathan] Huberdeau,” the easygoing netminder told SJHN. “A lot of this stuff is out of your control, some of it you can control, you just focus on what you can control and go with it.
“I got faith, I trust the good Lord has a plan, and I just roll with it.”

Now Reimer is back with the San Jose Sharks, one of the things that he can control is his goalie mask.
You can see the Optimus Prime – err Reim – details on his new road bucket.
“The paint job, I kept it pretty clean because the new jerseys are pretty clean,” Reimer said.
“Baby sharks, yeah. I can’t take credit for that, that was the wife,” Reimer said of his back plate tribute to his two daughters, Nevaeh and Hope.
“Obstacles are things you see when you take your eyes off your goal” is an inspirational statement from businessman and entrepreneur E. Joseph Cossman, the co-creator of the ant farm.
And of course, Joshua 1:9.
“I’m a Christian,” Reimer said. “That’s the main thing in my life.”
