“Within 12 seconds, you better have your idea, right?”

According to Drew Remenda, that’s about how much time that San Jose Sharks video coaches Nick Gialdini and Cody Ward had, to decide whether to challenge the James van Riemsdyk goal on Oct. 19.

“Everybody in the world wanted us to challenge that goal against the Bruins. I wanted to challenge it. I actually said to the ref, we’re gonna challenge it,” Sharks head coach David Quinn shared. “I almost got clotheslined by [assistant coach] Brian Wiseman, who’s on the radio with these two. They’re like, we’re gonna lose it.”

And they were, in fact, right. Quinn personally double-checked, “I actually texted the league in between periods and they said we would have lost the challenge.”

So how did Gialdini and Ward know?

“There’s a fighting mantra,” Remenda, who was a San Jose Sharks video coach in their expansion era, said. “Be ready so you don’t have to get ready. That’s those guys.”
