Kane Accused of Gambling on Sharks Games

Anna Kane, Evander Kane’s wife, has accused her husband of gambling on his own games.

That was just one of a series of accusations levied by Anna Kane against the San Jose Sharks winger on her Instagram account this afternoon.

Anna Kane posted this around 9:30 PM PT:

“Mara” may refer to Evander Kane’s ex-girlfriend, Mara Teigen.

The San Jose Mercury-News has verified that this is indeed Anna Kane’s account.

“Can someone ask Gary Bettman how they can let a player gamble on his own games?” Anna Kane asked in one post.

In a now-deleted Instagram story, she also charged: “How does the [NHL] let a compulsive gambling addict still play when he’s obviously throwing games with bookies to win money?”

Anna Kane also alleged that Evander Kane had deserted her, their unborn son, and their infant daughter to vacation in Europe. She also said that she had been forced to sell her wedding ring to meet expenses and “buy my daughter baby formula.” All this, and their house is in the middle of being foreclosed.

This isn’t Evander Kane’s first run-in with gambling issues.

In 2019, The Cosmopolitan Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas sued him because of $500,000 in unpaid gambling debts. The suit was dropped in April 2020.

In January 2021, Kane filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, admitting that he had lost $1.5 million dollars due to gambling “at casino and via bookie (sports betting).”

“With respect to my gambling, it has been an issue in my past and it would be inaccurate to pretend it has not had a negative effect on my life, financially and otherwise,” Evander Kane wrote in a March bankruptcy filing. “I have undergone and continue to receive personal therapy to deal with it and other matters and hope that the issue is behind me.”

San Jose Sharks GM Doug Wilson also added in March that Kane “is getting guidance and support in the areas that he needs.”

“My heart goes out to anyone who has to deal with loved ones addicted to anything in any form who put that before their own family,” Anna Kane wrote today. “I wouldn’t wish this pain or any of this on anyone this is a living nightmare.”

The NHL issued this response to Anna Kane’s accusations this afternoon:

The San Jose Sharks followed by issuing this statement to San Jose Hockey Now:

Kane’s agent could not be reached.

Gambling — even on your own team — has long been considered one of the cardinal sins in sports.

Most famously, Pete Rose received a lifetime ban from baseball in 1989 for betting on the team that he was managing, the Cincinnati Reds.

Point is: These are very, very serious allegations that Evander Kane is facing — and if he’s found guilty, the NHL is likely to come down hard on him.
