Erik Karlsson netted his 700th point in style.

In the first period of the San Jose Sharks-Calgary Flames tilt at SAP Center, Karlsson, as he so often has throughout his illustrious career, made something of nothing.

First, he put the Sharks on the power play with about nine minutes left in the opening frame. It was a much-needed breath of air for a home team that was down 1-0 and outshot 7-2.

For Karlsson, it’s the ninth penalty that he’s drawn this year, tied for third-best among NHL defensemen this year, behind only Cale Makar and Moritz Seider.

Then, off the power play draw, won by Tomas Hertl, Karlsson sold shot as if his life depended on it, making what San Jose Sharks TV color man Drew Remenda called a “Magic Johnson” pass to Timo Meier for the slam dunk.

Karlsson is the 12th-fastest defenseman to reach the 700-point milestone.

It’s also Karlsson’s 40th point this year. He leads NHL defensemen in both goals (12) and points this season

Unfortunately, that looks like all the good news for the San Jose Sharks tonight. The Flames broke the game open with three goals in 1:54 to put the game out of reach.
