SJHN Daily: Eyssimont Re-Signs With Lightning, Rangers & Gallant Part Ways
The San Jose Sharks have not been able to put together a strong whole since 2019, the last time that they made the playoffs, but they continue to produce viable parts.
There’s of course Brent Burns on the Carolina Hurricanes. Timo Meier on the New Jersey Devils.
And while he’s not a star a la Burns or Meier, Mikey Eyssimont is another example of this, as the Tampa Bay Lightning just re-signed him to a two-year, $1.6 million deal yesterday. It’s his first one-way contract.
The San Jose Sharks claimed Eyssimont off waivers from the Winnipeg Jets on Jan. 6, and quickly installed him onto their top-six. While that’s some indication of the cellar-dwelling squad’s lack of depth, Eyssimont certainly took advantage of his good fortune, scoring eight points in 20 games with the Sharks, and consistently impressing with his compete and underrated skill.
Two months later, GM Mike Grier was able to parlay the waiver claim into a mid-range Draft pick, dealing Eyssimont to the playoff-bound Lightning for Vladislav Namestnikov. Grier then sent Namestnikov to the Jets for a 2025 fourth-round pick.
In a lesser role on Tampa Bay, the gritty winger managed just a goal and an assist in 15 regular season games, and a goal and an assist in three playoff appearances, but his new deal suggests a fairly solid role in the Lightning’s bottom-six next season.
