Former Barracuda captain and long-time member of the San Jose Sharks organization John McCarthy was named the new head coach of the San Jose Barracuda on Wednesday morning.

BREAKING: McCarthy Named Barracuda Head Coach, Sommer Becomes Senior Adviser

Spending just under ten full seasons as a player and three as a coach for the Barracuda, McCarthy has just about experienced it all with San Jose. He has learned from Roy Sommer, who is moving to a new role as senior adviser with the Barracuda, and San Jose Sharks interim general manager Joe Will is confident that McCarthy can step into his new role and succeed. Fans have been somewhat prepared for McCarthy to take on a larger role for a while, and now he has the opportunity to show what he can do. Wednesday afternoon, both Will and McCarthy spoke on the coaching changes and what their plans are for the coming year.

Along with Sommer, assistant coach Jimmy Bonneau has been re-assigned to the Sharks scouting corps, assistant Mike Chiasson is joining CAA and becoming a player agent, and goaltending coach Dany Sabourin is departing to be closer to his Quebec home.

Here are my and Sheng Peng’s takeaways from yesterday’s press conference.
