It was a minor NHL Trade Deadline deal, the San Jose Sharks sending goaltender Alexei Melnichuk to the Tampa Bay Lightning for Antoine Morand, but for the San Jose organization, it was an important admission.
Just a season ago, Melnichuk was being talked about as the future of Sharks goaltending, following solid looks in the KHL.
The Russian netminder could never put it together for the San Jose Barracuda though, posting an .867 Save % in two AHL campaigns.
So, where did the disconnect occur, and why were the Sharks comfortable moving on from Melnichuk?
