what excites you the most about being in San Jose and the future of the franchise? Do you feel at home?
Yaroslav,
i am so excited that you’re looking to be the future of our beloved Sharks.
if you weren’t a goalie, what position would you play and have you ever been in or wanted to be in a goalie fight?
Dude! He was in a goalie fight already! He didn’t win, and it wasn’t a very intense fight, but still this guy is so fucking cool!

I was wondering if any of your Barracuda teammates have surprised or impressed you. And which one is the trickiest in a shootout
Dear Yaroslav,
I noticed that you don’t do any tending of the crease ice before a period starts. You’re the only goalie I’ve ever seen just skate to the crease and leave it alone. Is there a particular reason? Do you think there is any benefit to what other goalies do, or they just do it because that’s what everyone has always done, but it makes no difference?

How did you become a right-handed catching goalie? Do you think it gives you any advantage? Does catching right-handed help with your puck handling skills?
Yo Yaroslav!
And Sheng, I wanna keep my email private, but I swear to dog that I’m a paying subscriber!
Yaroslav,
which other goalies have you looked up too when you decided to be a goalie, and how have they impacted you on how you play?
sincerely, Isaac💪🏽

Have you learned any especially new or surprising wisdom, technique, or habits from any of the goalies you’ve been in a tandem with?
What is your game prep routine?
What do you do in breaks between periods to stay focused?
Do coaches engage with you in any way during games, or you just play and all talk happens after the games?
hi askarov, i’m so glad you’re happy to be here.
my question is since you said at the start if the year, you wouldn’t spill on the world juniors super glue incident because you told it to another podcast and that needed to release first, can we get the story now?
also, how did you and your wife meet?
Goalies tend take longer to develop, I’ll use Stolarz as an example of a goalie who is hitting into their prime later in their career, how do you as a younger goalie balance development over expectations? Coming into the league as a younger guy for your position how do you develop faster and or focus less on results and more on process all while maintaining confidence? Nabokov was one of my all time fav players and seeing him develop the next him is amazing. Best of luck and thanks for taking a pretty comprehensive question. In fairness the article was… Read more »
Hey Yaroslav, I wanted to know exactly how you like your name pronounced as I’ve heard a few variations of it. Glad to have you in teal!
Yaroslav, thanks for answering our questions!
From your interviews, it looks like you’re quite mindful. What mental exercises (for example, meditation) do you practice to prepare yourself for life as an NHL goalie?
When facing an opponent, how do you prepare for the game? Do you watch video of certain players? Do you look for overall team styles? I have no clue how a goalie prepares for an opponent but would love to learn more.
Also, we as fans are so stoked that you are here!!
Super cool 🙂 Please let him that I/we are excited for him to be our goalie. He is great 🙂
Can you please ask him who he hangs out with on the Sharks or Barracuda?
Also, what is he currently focusing on improving in his game?
And what is his practice like? How much of his time does he spend with Nabby? What about Spiers? What about Ryan Miller? Who does he mostly work with day-to-day when it comes to improving his craft?
What skills in the D-men compliment his game the most?
Yaro,
1. Can you please pronounce your name for us so we can collective know the “right way”
2. I recently spent about a year overseas and was fascinated by cultural differences. What are some of the things that have surprised you most about American culture since you’ve come over?
I’m a new hockey fan and believe it or not, you’re my first ever jersey purchase. Huge fan, love your swagger, can’t wait for next season.

Hell yeah!! I hope these questions get asked!
First- Yarsolav- we are super excited that you are a Shark and excited about the future! Question: How much do you work with Thomas Speer and Nabby and what do you work on? You already move so incredibly well, it’s amazing to watch you cover side-to-side, but what are you working on/how would you like to see your game continue to develop? Also- what will you do this summer- both for fun and training? Sheng, I also would like to keep my email private but hopefully you can look me up. Btw, you do so much great free content– not… Read more »
Would he rather win the vezina or get a goal in the NHL?
Yaroslav — Welcome to San Jose and keep smiling! Your biography indicates that you come from Omsk Russia, a city of approximately 1 million and the 12th largest city in Russia — strangely similar demographics to San Jose. What commonalities and differences do you see between the two cities? What do you miss the most about Omsk? And what do you like the most so far in your short time in San Jose?
What genre of music is your favorite? Have you been to a concert in the U.S.?
What are some of your top moments as you’ve gone through all the different levels of play? I loved playing goalie as a kid and I still hold certain plays as core memories. Are there any that made you realize this is your forever position?
Hi Yaroslav,
What are your favorite sports other than hockey, and favorite teams/athletes from those sports?
Thanks! And thanks for setting this up, Sheng!
Do you prefer the beach or the mountains in california?
I notice you use stock graphics on your gear and even have a somewhat generic mask. Any interest in having a custom mask job that tells a story about you? A lot has been said about your personality… I’m wondering if you are into showing that in your gear too. Either way, your play speaks volumes!
Also, you seem to be such good friends with Klim Kostin. Have you played together previously or did you two just become fast friends? What do you guys like to do when you hang out?

Do you or any of the other Russians on the team have a Russian food spot in the Bay Area that you frequent? Or do you predominantly cook native food at home when you eat it?

Hi Mr. Askarov, we’ve as fans have really loved the joy you show at games, where does that come from? Was there a coach or teammate that influence you to show your joy and personality in such ways? thanks and good luck recovering, will love to see you play again soon!
