Smith Sharp in Boston Return, But Sharks Lose 6-3

BOSTON — The San Jose Sharks visit TD Garden to take on the Boston Bruins.

Barclay Goodrow and Will Smith and Fabian Zetterlund scored, but the Bruins came back for a 6-3 victory.

Period 1

Askarov’s stickhandling should help San Jose Sharks’ breakout. He’s good with the puck, in terms of his skill with puck, just an iffy decision-maker.

3 in: Beaut Smith pass to Zetterlund in slot. But later in shift at other end, he gets a rim that I think he needs to pick up as the winger, need to rewatch. All this leads to a Sharks’ rim off the stanchion and a Bruins post. One small play leads to a ton of chaos, that’s hockey. Or the plot to Ray Bradbury’s “A Sound of Thunder”.

6 in: Solid fourth-line shift there, restoring order.

7 in: Zetterlund catches the puck on the wing, but then tries a behind-the-back dump-in that’s easily intercepted. But credit to him, in the D-zone, Zetterlund also muscles the puck out. There’s a lesson there, for sure. How you react to the mistake just as important as the initial gaffe.

That’s a nice winger catch by Eklund off a stretch pass. Crossing B’s blueline.

9 in: What a save by Askarov on Geekie. Flat-out 2-on-1, Thrun can’t stop the pass. Ferraro got caught low, but chiefly, don’t see a forward in proper back-up position.

Lettieri goal: Nice deflection. Oesterle shot was going well wide, Lettieri pulls it back in. Ceci on him, but Lettieri’s stick was wide too, that’s a hard one.

9 left: Zetterlund takes it from Pastrnak high, good, but Sharks defending too much.

Then good read by Ferraro, 2-on-1, to switch to the puck-carrier, maybe surprised him. Then other Bruin had a Shark right behind him. Actually a really good defensive play there.

Goodrow goal: That’s what you need from your fourth line! Good dump-in, Sturm has speed on entry, so important, good basic hockey by Dellandrea on dump to wait on Sturm’s first step. Then Goodrow beats his man down the slot. We have a genuine Goodrow goal-scoring streak!

1 left: Huge saves by Askarov. Off the draw, Coyle one-timer in the slot. Then off Celebrini turnover, Pastrnak had a shot from distance.

San Jose Sharks are competing, that’s not bad so far, they’re motivated. But too many mistakes. Bruins broadcast had it 11-6 scoring chances for the black and gold, and that’s what I see. Not being careful enough with puck.

Period 2

Another Smith feed to Zetterlund in slot to start, good effort. Smith was getting checked.

2 in: Thrun erases Lettieri, like. Lettieri is a smaller forward, but it’s good that Thrun can dominate the players that he should.

3 in: That’s a good wall pick-up by Smith, then another feed in the slot to Zetterlund. There you go.

4 in: That O-zone shift, just admire the constant pressure that Celebrini puts on goalies. There’s not a puck that he dislikes putting to the net. He got one shot between the legs of a Bruins defender, off an errant pass.

Pastrnak goal: Pastrnak bounce off Sharks defender into net. A little breakdown in terms of Pastrnak being so open, not sure if he heeled his shot or was going wide on purpose. That’s one of those when you’re good, you’re lucky goals.

8 in: Eklund pass in transition, goes nowhere, turnover. Not loving his game tonight so far.

Smith goal: What a shot! Off his steal too, takes it from Beecher on exit. Very confident give and go with Granlund on entry, love to see it. First goal since Dec. 27. Looked every bit a top-six NHL forward on that shift.

9 left: Kastelic just tried to truck Celebrini, but Celebrini able to brace and most importantly, keep the puck.

8 left: Really bad Walman giveaway there, trying to exit pass to Granlund, right idea, but Pastrnak jumped on it. Leads to Ceci penalty, big momentum kill there. Walman hasn’t been sharp this game and especially last, there’s a reason why he got dropped to third pairing.

Zetterlund goal: Huge kill, Sharks were so tired there, couldn’t get the change. Then Askarov kicks a rebound far out in NZ, Sharks desperation change, but they’re behind on play, developing down-low odd-man for Boston. But Smith gets in the way of Wotherspoon at the point, and soft touches it to Zetterlund, who now has a ton of space because all the Bruins were down low. Zetterlund follows up his first shot, great effort by him.

3 left: That’s good battle by Eklund in OZ corner, gets the puck to Wennberg. Then Eklund cross-checked in front, sent flying as point shot comes in. Nice work though.

Strong Sharks’ period, managed puck a lot better overall, good chances.

1 left: Good work by Zetterlund on DZ wall, eventually forced a turnover.

Period 3

1 in: Wennberg patience circling net pulls Korpisalo out, almost a gimme for Celebrini. We knock him when he doesn’t shoot, but the patience obviously pays off a lot too.

4 in: Good read by Ferraro to go down, block the 2-on-1 down-low centering pass. I’ve liked what I’ve seen from him tonight.

5 in: Big rebound for Lohrei, looks like Rutta keeps him from it. Good work. Leads to Celebrini entry, Wennberg Grade-A. He needed that, San Jose Sharks needed that.

Coyle goal: Of course, right when I write that about Ferraro. Sharks just hemmed in there, not any one guy there, Askarov made a number of saves, but eventually Coyle in slot, a tired Sharks couldn’t mark him.

10 in: Tough sledding D-zone, Pastrnak line had the puck the whole time, but Celebrini and Wennberg especially stay stout, then they break out for partial 2-on-1. Good “man’s” shift for the Sharks.

Big Askarov save on Zadorov breakaway, bad Celebrini read there? Chased the passer when Walman was there.

7 left: Good Sharks power play, at least the second unit, Smith shot off backboards, Walman shoveled it to the front. Chaos! Graf had a great opportunity.

Coyle goal: Oh no. Askarov can’t let that in. Coyle just gets it off centering pass, into the wickets.
