SPECULATION: Sharks Asked About Hanifin?

The San Jose Sharks are clearly on the hunt for defense.

Yesterday, they acquired young blueliner Calen Addison from the Minnesota Wild.

Elliotte Friedman thinks they also inquired about a well-known Calgary Flames defenseman.

“Kinda suspect the Sharks called Calgary about Noah Hanifin,” Friedman wrote in 32 Thoughts yesterday. “Don’t see that as a fit.”

No doubt, the 1-10-1 Sharks could use a minutes-muncher like Hanifin, a playoff-caliber top-four defender who’s 6-foot-3 and has a strong two-way game.

But of course, the 26-year-old pending UFA might have bigger things in mind than playing for a rebuilding franchise. He also has an eight-team No-Trade Clause.

His acquisition cost would also be high, higher than Mike Grier seems to want to pay.

We’ll see if Hanifin hits free agency. If you see him as the undisputed leader, on and off the ice, of a young D corps, maybe there’s a fit with the Sharks then.

That’s what Sheng suggested in the most recent episode of the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast.
