There’s a clear theme with the San Jose Sharks and the trade rumors that have swirled around them during Draft weekend.

Today, Frank Seravalli reported that the Vancouver Canucks might try to dump Tyler Myers’s contract on the Sharks.

“I believe the Canucks have had a deal on the table for Tyler Myers for weeks, plural now,” Seravalli told Sportsnet. “I don’t know what the hold-up is, if it’ll get done, given how long it’s lingered out there.

“But I think the Canucks and, I believe it’s the San Jose Sharks, have talked about Tyler Myers, I don’t know where that’s going, something to keep an eye on.”

It didn’t happen during Day 2 of the Draft, and it may not be a while, since Myers is due a $5 million bonus on Sept. 1. If a team acquires him before that day, they’ll be on the hook for that bonus. After Sept. 1, however, they’ll owe Myers just $1 million of his $6 million AAV, though that entire AAV will count against their cap.

This isn’t the only Seravalli report from the Draft that ties the San Jose Sharks to an expensive veteran right-handed defenseman in a salary dump. Yesterday, he reported that the Sharks could be a destination for the Pittsburgh Penguins’ Jeff Petry, who has a $6.25 million AAV for each of the next two seasons.

REPORT: Petry to Sharks, Penguins Interested in Kahkonen?

Could either Myers or Petry be among the replacements for right-handed reigning Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson on the 2023-24 San Jose Sharks? And what might GM Mike Grier extract from the Canucks or the Penguins to take on those bad contracts?

One comp: Today, the New York Islanders traded one more year of veteran center Josh Bailey at $5 million AAV to the Chicago Blackhawks, adding a 2026 second-round pick for Chicago’s troubles.
