Queen Elizabeth II passed on Thursday, and the tributes have been flowing worldwide.

In the hockey world, everybody is remembering when the Queen dropped the puck on a pre-season Vancouver Canucks and San Jose Sharks game on Oct. 6, 2002 at GM Place.

Here’s how Sharks acting captain Mike Ricci remembered it at the Mercury News.

Wayne Gretzky was there too, and the Daily Hive looks back at his memories.

It’s apparently never been confirmed, but it’s generally accepted that Sharks captain Owen Nolan skipped the game and puck drop for political reasons. Per the Vancouver Sun: “Since Nolan’s family hailed from Falls Road, the Catholic section of Belfast that was at the centre of the Troubles, he was firmly in the Republican camp and a staunch anti-monarchist.”
