Are Oilers Interested in Karlsson or Not?

Who do you believe?

Last week, Darren Dreger started a fire on Hockey Twitter when he suggested that the Edmonton Oilers could be interested in Erik Karlsson.

“The Oilers need a top defenceman,” TSN’s Darren Dreger said on Insider Trading. “Now, do they get wild and crazy and try to swing for the fences and try to get in on Erik Karlsson of the San Jose Sharks? It seems impossible that they could do that, but there’s some around the organization with interest.”

SJHN Daily: Could Karlsson, Kane Reunite in Edmonton?

However, other insiders were quick to put out the fire.

Mark Spector of Sportsnet promised, “100 percent guarantee the Oilers aren’t going to trade for Erik Karlsson.”

Frank Seravalli of the Daily Faceoff went even further, calling the rumors “illegitimate” and news to his San Jose Sharks sources – he also added that the Oilers wouldn’t even swap on-the-outs Jesse Puljujarvi for Karlsson and half his contract retained (four more years after this season, $5.75 million AAV).

Whoa.

But just a few days ago, TSN’s Chris Johnston stoked the fire again in his newsletter: “The Oilers and Sharks have each done their diligence on a potential Erik Karlsson trade, but a big hurdle remains before those talks can get anywhere close to serious: Is San Jose willing to eat a significant portion of his $11.5-million cap hit?”

Uhh Puljujarvi, anybody?

I’m joking, but this rollercoaster appears to be a preview for what’s in store for San Jose Sharks fans from now until the Trade Deadline, in terms of Karlsson trade rumors. There’s going to be a lot of they’re interested – and then some, no, they’re not – because of Karlsson’s outstanding play but overwhelming contract.
