Tim Heed Signs with HC Lugano

Tim Heed might be joining Joe Thornton…but not in San Jose.
Earlier today, HC Lugano of Switzerland’s National League announced the signing of pending UFA Heed.
Thornton, of course, has been practicing with HC Davos, amidst rumors that he’s going to suit up for them.
So does that spell the end of Heed’s time with the San Jose Sharks? Not so fast.
According to the HC Lugano press release (and Google Translate), Heed’s contract is “valid only to mid-November,” which appears to make him a candidate for a return to the Sharks or the NHL.
An e-mail to Heed’s agent was not returned.
The 29-year-old Swedish defenseman will join Lugano on September 1st. Heed has been in and out of the line-up for the San Jose Sharks over the last four years, scoring 29 points in 105 games.

You can do worse with your 7th d-men for sure
Meloche needs a new contract and there’s Merkley and Gregoire, as well as Roy (who i think is done in SJ). DeSimone’s got another year on his deal. 29 yo Heed seems like Europe will be a permanent home to me. the Sharks have Pasichnuk on the left side who can QB a PP and bomb shots like Burns. i don’t see much need to re-sign Heed.
Four of those six guys are probably NHL-irrelevant (Meloche, Gregoire, Roy & DeSimone). Merkley will be entering his 1st pro season, so penciling him in as your 7th d-man is a grave mistake until he’s proven he’s earned an NHL spot. Same thing could be said of Pasichnuk. Have to say too, Burns’s shot is a special, special thing, so I’d caution comparing a rookie’s to it. That’s like comparing John Leonard’s shot to say Ovechkin’s. Anyway…I think there’s value in signing a legit No. 6-7 d-man at minimum or near-minimum. I’m not saying it has to be Heed. If… Read more »
