The San Jose Sharks welcomed the Chicago Blackhawks into SAP Center on Doug Wilson Appreciation Night. Nico Sturm and Erik Karlsson gave the Sharks the early lead, but the Blackhawks punched back with back-to-back stunning short-handed goals, and embarrassed San Jose 5-2.

GOTTA SEE IT: Wilson Passes Torch to Grier in Emotional Appreciation Night Speech

Period 1

5 in: Think Simek overplayed that, didn’t trust Megna, Hawks get a good chance.

8 in: Gadjovich shot out of a cannon, does nice job protecting puck from Murphy. Then makes a play to Karlsson. He can do all three of those things regularly, show good feet, protect puck, make the connecting play, he’s going to stick here.

9 in: Beaut Karlsson outlet pass, he’s shown elite touch so far tonight.

9 left: Couture line been involved in some strong forecheck tonight. Unlike the Canes, Sharks are hemming the opposition a little.

Couture goal: Karlsson whoa. He’s been terrific tonight. Credit where it’s due.

Period 2

Toews goal: I’ve liked Karlsson tonight, but he gets caught there. Puck-watching on Johnson, Toews sneaks behind him.

Lafferty goal: People will see No. 65 and see red, but he gets zero help here. Sharks can’t keep puck possession down low in outnumbered situation, ugly.

Lafferty goal: Both Labanc and Karlsson go after Dickinson, maybe assume a gassed Couture has Lafferty. He doesn’t. Just ugly.

Seems like a fragile group, in so far as one goal goes in, can’t stem the tide. Common San Jose Sharks theme in these bad years.

4 left: Some defense, finally. Benning locks sticks with Athanasiou coming down slot, just in case bad angle shot spits out rebound.

Another good shift from Gadjovich to close period.

Period 3

3 in: Meier needs to get back to north-south, and he does there. Keep shooting!

Ferraro-Karlsson, Vlasic-Benning, Megna-Simek are you D-pairings.

Raddysh goal: Backbreaker. Similar backhand move on breakaway to Toews’s move, but to other side. Time of game, you need a big stop too. Haven’t really had any of those from Kahkonen tonight.

Dickinson goal: Hertl chases a puck at the blueline that he shouldn’t, leaving Karlsson to fend with a 2-on-1. Need a stop at some point too. Irresponsible play from Hertl, though I know where it’s coming from, San Jose Sharks down two.
