The San Jose Sharks visit the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena. Luke Kunin and Matt Nieto kept the Sharks tied up with the Golden Knights

Period 1

5 in: Megna defends Smith well 1-on-1. But San Jose Sharks’ third line cannot exit and create offensive and possession at the other end. Wondering if Gregor would be a good element for this line, move Bonino down for Lindblom. Maybe put Lorentz back on wing, personally prefer him there myself.

6 in: Back-to-back shifts, Labanc then Barabanov on forecheck create OZ time and chances off lost OZ faceoffs. Good work, Sharks will need more of that.

9 in: Nick Cicek, meet Mark Stone. Cicek turns it over, cannot evade Stone forecheck. Stone is one of the best at it.

8 left: Karlsson DZ turnover, Golden Knights chance. Gotta be better to beat Vegas.

6 left: Cicek follows up with a couple good first passes there.

4 left: Couture, Vlasic can’t let that pass get through, but what a save by Reimer on Marchessault.

Next shift, Kolesar misses a maybe open net, Kunin blocked it. Frankly, Vegas on a higher level right now. Shot quality clearly on Vegas side.

Nice work by Bonino, Kunin, get it to Sturm, penalty. That’s a way to grab the momentum back, a strong San Jose Sharks power play.

3 left: Eichel looks like he has a step on Karlsson, but Karlsson able to poke check.

Eichel goal: Too easy. Looks like a zone D vulnerability. Bonino and Kunin both caught looking at the same point man. That means there’s an open Eichel. Comes off Cicek turnover, rough period for the rook.

Period 2

7 in: San Jose Sharks have a pulse, smooth breakout by Couture line, Barabanov all over puck. Then Kunin goal created by tough forecheck and attack by Sturm, who has been on his toes tonight. Another Karlsson assist.

Vegas howling over potential Ferraro high hit on Marchessault, but I don’t see it. Could be first time that Sharks get a break on a call in their rivalry.

Next shift, Sturm on top of the puck. I honestly really enjoy watching him play. Direct, winning hockey.

9 left: Like that Hertl decision to reset when he has no speed with puck, a couple passes, San Jose Sharks re-enter and create OZ time. But then Karlsson trips in almost place as he did in Minnesota, how odd. Stephenson chance, but Reimer there.

Marchessault goal: That’s on Cicek, I think. He’s up on play, gets beat, can’t catch up, it’s a 2-on-1 for Ferraro, Marchessault just beats Reimer straight up. I guess Harrington slots in next game.

2 left: Cicek does make a pretty backhand exit pass. I saw this in preseason, this skill, he keeps that up, he can have a long career if the defensive side is ironed out. Rough game, but it’s his NHL debut. There’s talent here too.

Period 3

Opening shift, Karlsson first step still so quick. Fun to watch, often playing a faster game than everybody else.

Nieto goal: Off OZ faceoff loss, Vlasic pinches, doesn’t let the puck out. Then Barabanov, seemingly covered, but able to muscle a pass to the front, where Nieto victimizes puck-watching Golden Knights.

10 in: Wow, Labanc post. Meier gains the zone through the middle, then lucky bounce, Hertl patience, finds Labanc unmarked in slot. Outstanding work overall.

8 left: What a stretch indirect pass from Karlsson to Meier, wish I wish in Vegas to see that.

Tough penalty of Sturm: His stick got lifted, not intentionally, into Cotter’s face. Big kill.

4 left: Have liked how Meier has skated today, so direct and powerful.

Meier goal: Remenda calls it. What work by Barabanov, sucks 2-3 Golden Knights penalty killers in. That much more space for Couture to find Meier.
