“SLEEPOVER!” Toffoli Describes His Night in Smith & Celebrini’s Room

Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith have a “sleepover” every time the San Jose Sharks are on the road.
They’re road roommates (and teenagers), after all.
But Tuesday night, after they beat the Buffalo Sabres 6-2, veteran Tyler Toffoli joined them.
On a rollaway cot, that is.
I’ll just put this 🧾 right here…

What in the world?
“We were just joking on the bus when we were bussing from Toronto to Buffalo,” Toffoli said. “Smitty said something like, ‘Yeah, I feel like we’re all gonna score tomorrow. All three of us score, sleepover.’ I was like, ‘Sure, whatever’…ended up happening. I scored and went to the bench, he’s screaming ‘SLEEPOVER, SLEEPOVER!’”
Smith confirmed shouting this at Toffoli after the alternate captain’s empty netter in a 6-2 victory at the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday.

San Jose Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky even encouraged it.
“I got on the plane [to Denver], and Warso was like, ‘You know you gotta have the sleepover, right?’” Toffoli laughed.
It wasn’t just Celebrini, Smith, and Toffoli in the room, at least before lights out.
“We had a couple of guys in the room pretty late telling stories,” Smith said. “It was a fun night. [Ty Dellandrea] was in there for a bit, [Jack] Thompson, Mario [Ferraro]. We got in pretty late from Buffalo, so it’s kind of hard falling asleep sometimes after games, so the guys stopped by.”
“It was hilarious, we were just joking around and having fun. It was like a weird bet and then we all scored, and we were like, ‘Hey, you gotta sleep in our room,’ and then it happened,” Celebrini said.
“‘It was the funniest night,'” ex-San Jose Sharks teammate Mackenzie Blackwood reported Toffoli texted him the next day.
So who fell asleep first? Toffoli threw Smith under the bus.
“We just shot the shit there for a couple of hours. All of a sudden – I think it was Smitty – all I hear is a little bit of a snore, and he was out,” Toffoli said. “Woke up in the morning, he met up with one of his buddies, Mack and I talked a little bit, and I moved right next door…I got off the cot and went to a normal, comfy bed.”
Smith defended himself, saying it had gotten pretty late by the time he fell asleep.
So when’s the last time the 32-year-old Stanley Cup winner, 284 goals on his NHL resume, participated in a sleepover?
“Uh…never,” he laughed. “Maybe in minor hockey.”
But Toffoli’s willingness to take part in the sleepover shenanigans speaks to the his ability to get along with much-younger teammates.
“He’s been around a long time, he’s played for a lot of teams – I think that’s helped. He played with [Cole] Caufield when he was a younger player,” Warsofsky said of Toffoli. “He was a younger player in LA when he was learning how to play in this league. I think he’s been through a lot of different experiences to help these players.”
Celebrini and Smith each echoed that sentiment.
“He’s a good mentor for us, a friend,” Celebrini said. “He’s like an older brother, so it’s cool to hang out with him. That’s the beauty of him, he’s just a great guy. You ask anyone from any team he’s been on.”
“It’s pretty special. Having a vet like that, you want to hang out with him. He’s already won a Cup, just asking him for a bunch of stories, it’s fun,” Smith said.
Toffoli won a Stanley Cup with the Los Angeles Kings in 2014, and has played for seven teams in 13 seasons, the Kings, Vancouver Canucks, Montreal Canadiens, Calgary Flames, New Jersey Devils, Winnipeg Jets, and Sharks.
Celebrini and Smith look to be racking up the bets, adding in their Beanpot and Will Smith jersey bets.
“These two young kids are a joy to this locker room,” Warsofsky said. “They have a good sense of humor to themselves, but when it’s time to work, they work. We can kind of see this core developing.”
For now, the Smith and Celebrini road sleepovers are expected to continue.
“I like hanging out with people,” Smith said, admitting that he doesn’t like sleeping alone. “I think it’s fun to have a roommate, it’s good camaraderie.”
Will Toffoli ever join them again?
“Maybe if Will gives up his bed,” Toffoli smiled, “and he takes the cot.”
