Sheng on Sharks’ Goaltending Situation

Published

on

JD has on Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now to talk about the San Jose Sharks’ off-season. Has Martin Jones played his last game in teal? Could the Sharks be in the market for not one, but two goalies (5:00)? We debate the merits of Petr Mrázek as a potential starter (11:30), who could be on the market for the San Jose Sharks as a potential third-line center (18:00), and Brent Burns’s future (21:00). We finish by discussing if Doug Wilson makes a huge splash this summer (22:30) and who Sheng thinks is headed to Seattle (26:30).

What is the cap outlook to hold on to Jones as the backup for next year, and then do a buyout end of next season? Would there be an advantage to having that as a plan? I understand it will shorten the retained cap. Does it less the amount too?

Stephen Kolesar

Sorry, I may not have been clear. I see Sheng’s argument for a buyout beginning 21-22 season in that article, but not one for using Jones as the backup for 21-22 and then buying him out in 22-23. Would that lessen the cap it and make the extension of the buyout shorter? Would that be a good option if they are not able to make the progress they want in improving the rest of the roster this off-season or they think finding 2 goalies unfeasible?

not sure on the SP logic concerning Mrazek. the guy has at least 4 complete seasons with DET and CAR splitting time/1B with the “starter”. that’s more than enough experience to move up to a #1 goalie. considering DW just handed the #1 spot to Jones, and then paid him like he was a franchise goalie, getting this “starter-on-a-budget” for a couple of seasons doesn’t seem like a bad idea. Reimer/Mrazek similar quality/money combo is better than Jones/Dell was the last couple of seasons they were the Sharks backstops. the Sharks are gonna have to change the way they play… Read more »

Re: Mrazek, I know he has a few years as Detroit’s No. 1, larger point was he did drop the ball there and get beat out. It’s not that I dislike him, I just wonder what made him so special above rest of of the 1B UFA goalie crowd. He’s a capable goalie, but I wouldn’t feel that comfortable with him as the clear-cut No. 1 and Korenar as back-up. Mrazek/Driedger or Rask/Korenar are clearly more reassuring in my mind because of Mrazek’s just OK overall profile

I’ve been really enjoying this podcast of late, especially when Sheng drops in.

Really enjoyed the show today with Sheng and JD, a little more calmness than usual haha. I am not sold on Mrazek either but definitely agree that someone similar to him X2 is the best solution considering the cap and everything else.

i picked up Driedger in trade on my armchair GM team. after a convo with SP, i think DW might not be so anxious to go down that road…again (Jones). Driedger might be the real deal, but he might not. i might still pursue him if i’m sure i can get him signed on the low side and minimal term. however, the safest/surest bet for a bubble team like the Sharks will be next season is to go the route of signing guys like Mrazek and Reimer. gives the Sharks time to figure out if they something in either/both Korenar… Read more »
