The San Jose Sharks are hiring Ryan Warsofsky as an assistant coach, according to a source.

Warsofsky will run the defense and the PK for new Sharks head coach David Quinn. He replaces John Madden in that role, who was let go along with Bob Boughner on Jul. 1.

Kevin Weekes reported that Warsofsky would interview for the position on Tuesday. Previously, SJHN reported that Warsofsky had interviewed for the Sharks’ head coaching position.

Warsofsky, 34, just guided the Chicago Wolves to a Calder Cup, becoming the youngest head coach since Peter Laviolette in 1999 to bring home the AHL’s ultimate prize. The North Marshfield, Massachusetts native enjoyed a 71-25-6-7 record with the Wolves over the last two regular seasons.

Previously, Warsofsky was the head coach of the Charlotte Checkers in 2019-20, and a Checkers assistant coach during their 2018-19 Calder Cup campaign. The Carolina Hurricanes switched their AHL affiliation from Charlotte to Chicago for the 2020-21 season.

From 2013 to 2018, Warsofsky served as director of hockey operations, head coach, and assistant coach of the ECHL’s South Carolina Stingrays.

Warsofsky, a defenseman, played professionally in Belgium, the Central Hockey League, and Federal Hockey League, and comes from a hockey family. His brothers Adam, Jarod, and David all played collegiately or professionally, David skating in 55 NHL contests from 2014 to 2018.

David Quinn coached David Warsofsky at Boston University. Quinn was the associate head coach and Warsofsky was a blueliner on the 2009 national championship-winning Terriers. San Jose Sharks forward Nick Bonino and San Jose Barracuda head coach John McCarthy were also on that team.

This is the second consecutive Wolves head coach that the San Jose Sharks have hired. In Jul. 2020, they hired Rocky Thompson as an associate head coach to round out Boughner’s staff. Thompson is now a part of John Tortorella’s Philadelphia Flyers staff.

Nice!

Also, Number 12 is being retired on February 25th

This hire could turn into something better than we hope. I’m just worried that after the Sharks first loss, the wolves are going to call for Quinn to be fired and let RW be coach. Ugh.
I’m excited about this. He gets a chance to experience the NHL and learn.

Go Sharks!!

The Masala Slapper

I agree, and it’s fresh thinking for a team (and league) that really needs it.

The team is gonna be lousy anyway, might as well experiment!

Bonino now being coached by his teammate – now ain’t that something. Karlsson is going to have a rough time following direction.

E A

Perhaps that will give him incentive to want to be on a different team.
