SJHN Daily: NHL Rejects Novel Kane to Sharks Proposal

It’s a good idea for the San Jose Sharks, but the NHL isn’t going to let it fly.

Patrick Kane is a free agent. And while the future Hall of Famer is looking to join a Stanley Cup contender — the Sharks are 4-15-2 — Curtis Pashelka of the Mercury News had a novel idea for getting San Jose involved in the Kane sweepstakes.

“Could the Sharks sign Kane to a somewhat richer contract (agreed to by Kane’s camp and the contending team), and trade him to that team while retaining some of the deal’s average annual value, for an asset in return?” Pashelka asked.

Nope.

Deputy commissioner Bill Daly rejected this proposal, telling the Mercury News that such a series of moves would be considered cap circumvention.

On the other hand, if another team signs Kane, they can offload a contract or two onto the Sharks. San Jose will have $9.3 million of cap space at the Trade Deadline.
