Nikolai Knyzhov will be back with the San Jose Sharks.

Per the Sharks, the pending RFA has re-signed with the Sharks for two years.

The Russian defenseman will make $1.1 million in 2023-24 and $1.4 million in 2024-25 on a one-way contract. The AAV is $1.25 million.

“We’re excited to keep Nikolai with our group for at least the next two years,” San Jose Sharks GM Mike Grier said in the team press release. “He worked hard to rejoin the team this season and we look forward to watching his game continue to grow.”

Knyzhov, 25, returned to the NHL on Mar. 6 after a brutal 20-month stretch of injuries that included hernia surgery, an infection from that surgery, groin surgery, and a torn Achilles.

The 2020-21 Sharks Rookie of the Year has played in nine games with the San Jose Sharks this season, notching one goal and averaging 16:21 a night.

Currently with the San Jose Barracuda, Knyzhov has one assist in 13 appearances.

It will be a big summer for Knyzhov, who’s looking to get back on track after his surprising rookie campaign. But Knyzhov, who the Sharks signed as a free agent out of the KHL in Jul. 2019, has proven that the litany of injuries hasn’t sapped his talent.

“I think the good news for us is that that injury didn’t affect his skating. He skates at an NHL level. I think he plays hard. He passes the puck hard,” head coach David Quinn said last week, before the Sharks sent Knyzhov back to the Barracuda. “The problem is, when you miss as much hockey as he has, his learning curve here to get acclimated at this level more consistently. And that’s gonna take time. We all have to be patient with him.”
