Sharks Combine Buzz: Misa the Pick? Dinner Mystery? Who Did San Jose Interview?

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Michael Misa wants to join the San Jose Sharks.

“My roommate, Michael Misa, is hoping to go there,” fellow 2025 Draft-eligible Malcolm Spence, also Misa’s best friend, said on Saturday at the Draft Combine.

“Their young core coming up is promising and exciting,” Misa told San Jose Hockey Now in an exclusive interview earlier this week. “If they were to draft me, I hope I could just help them, make an impact to their organization.”

Do the San Jose Sharks feel the same?

The sense around the Combine this week was that while the San Jose Sharks would prefer defenseman Matthew Schaefer, just because of organizational need on the blueline, that Misa will be the franchise’s pick at No. 2, assuming Schaefer goes No. 1 to the New York Islanders as expected. A trade-up can’t be ruled out, but the cost of that might be too great for GM Mike Grier.

I wonder if Hawks want to trade up and get Misa while giving up one of their D-prospects. Sharks may need to add one of their 2nd round picks or prospects to balance it out, though.

Pall Mall

Wouldn’t mind getting Alex Vlasic from Chicago.

SJShorky

Not going to happen.

RecycleShark

That’s a good idea. The Sharks need a RHD like Levshunov or Rinzel.

I saw an interesting trade idea of #2 oa + Chernyshov for #3 oa + Levshunov. That way the Hawks get Misa and Chernyshov and the Sharks get Levshunov and Martone. Levshunov was #2 oa last year.

Patrick

That’s a fantasy land trade.

Joseph

Damn. That would be tempting. I think in terms of value, it would be pretty epic asset management by the Sharks — turn the 33rd overall pick into the main piece that gets you the second overall pick in that same draft year. I do worry about finding too much synergy with a team like the Blackhawks. They’re in conference. The timelines align. These teams will be battling each other in the playoffs before long. I don’t love the idea of filling one void for SJ while filling two for a future rival. In terms of balance, the Hawks rebuild… Read more »

I won’t trade Chernyshov. Hanging up the phone

SJShorky

Yup

Joseph

Chernyshov is a potential top six winger and Levshunov is a potential top pairing defender. If you hang up the phone without listening and Hasso finds out, you’re fired.

kads

First, Chicago isn’t trading Levshunov. If they were, fine, I’m listening still. But as soon as they tell me Levshunov isn’t available, I’m hanging up the phone.

SJShorky

I’m hanging up because it’ll take Cherny plus. It won’t be the trade as proposed. It’ll be more from the Sharks and there’s other stuff I would part with instead. But yeah, I get your point.

SJShorky

Also not going to happen.

BurnsiesBeard

I think this would be a fairly decent trade. I think both sides would be unhappy with giving up their prospect, which is why it’s likely fair. Also very unlikely to happen.

SJShorky

I would do this for Musty before Cherny. Or Haltunen and A 3rd or something like that. I really did like Leshunov when I was sure we wouldn’t win the lotto.

…and then you wake up and realize it was all a dream.

Jeff

Seems like a no brainer selecting Misa. We were the lowest goal scoring team in the league last season! The only alternative, which is remote, is identifying a future star who is under the radar. Not every star was a #1 or 2 pick in the draft. That is where a GM or coach really makes a difference. Someone like Greg Popevic of the Spurs, identified players much lower in the draft to put together a dynasty. Is Grier of this calibre? Luc Robataille-Round 9 Doug Gilmour-Round 7 Brett Hull-Round 6 Kirill Kaprizov-Round 5 Joe Pavelski-Round 7 It goes on… Read more »

Worst offense last year, worst defense. And after the Blackwood trade, worst goaltending. It was so much fun, but that was an objectively terrible team. So basically any chance they get to bring in a good player, they should do it.

Jeff

Since I have a poor confidence level in Askarov, we pick Misa, probably the best offensive player that is ours for the taking, bring in Dickinson for D, sign goalie Ilya Samsonov in FA, and we’ve already upgraded our team out of the cellar for the least cost. Then, get serious and spend some bucks for another Dman like Fabbro, Gavrikov, or go big time with Ekblad, then target a guy like Marner. Cook for 2 seasons, and we’re ready to roll. Thoughts?

kads

I have confidence in Askarov unless the Sharks roll out another defense similar to this year. Any goalie would get shell shock having to play behind that. It’s seems like Grier understands this. I think a second goalie signed to be 1B for the next two years to play 35-40 games a year is the right way to manage it. Fabbro, Gavrikov and Ekblad would be a dream within a dream. Assuming 4 years term on Fabbro and 7 years each on the other two, though, so this would be the all-in move with no take backs. I also think… Read more »

mknepper

Not sure on Fabbro and no to Ekblad but yes to Gavrikov and Frederic.

kads

Have you been watching the Finals? Ekblad has been calmly digging pucks out and doing a lot of dirty work. He’s been super valuable, I think

mknepper

No on Samsonov and Ekblad but good with the rest.

Jeff

Why?

WW

If this team is going to overspend on a name brand free agent, I would rather it be Eklad than Marner. Ekblad will cost less than Marner, but importantly he fills a true need. Right now, not only are the Sharks light on D (and particularly RHD), but the youngsters have no #1D to mentor them. The main leader among defensemen is Ferraro right now, and he has a grand total of 0 playoff games under his belt. Having a #1D with cup-winning experience that the young defensemen can learn from has a lot value even if Ekblad’s own play… Read more »

Tim Duncan was the No.1 overall pick and the centerpiece of that dynasty and Pop was the Daryl Sutter of basketball, he demanded excellent fundamentals and structure and demanded championship team defense. He didn’t just draft Ginobili, tony Parker and danny green and throw them out there, he molded them into the players that they were through tough demanding couching. I agree with you that coaching and leadership is everything and the reason players are great or are busts.

SJShorky

I would almost bet Misa plays in the NHL immediately too so that actually helps the Sharks immediately. One less player to go for in UFA or trade to improve the roster.

Joseph

If the Sharks can solidify the second line around Smith, there’s a nice third line slot open that would be perfect for developing a rookie. Wennberg and Graf both have skill and are very responsible two way players, and they get a decent number of minutes at even strength. I kind of saw Chernyshov and Musty splitting time there, but Misa would be a great fit.

kads

Can’t remember which thread I said it, but I suggested this exact 3rd line somewhere. I honestly would rather have Misa up in the NHL on the Smith plan and keep Musty and Chernyshov with the Barracuda until we’re absolutely sure on both guys. Let them really refine their games so they are ready to hit the ground running and stay in the show when they do get the call. To me, those two guys are really important and the team should be very patient to make sure they hit. I also said that Misa could possibly take over the… Read more »

Paul Maul

Trading down to draft Mrtka is still the best decision. Getting your 2nd pair rhd for the next 15 years is the smartest move to make in this draft. Misa is blah and Frondell is the only intriguing forward outside of McQueen and Eklund.

Draft Mrtka and Fiddler and you’re simply just waiting for a top pairing RHD to become available from a team desperate for forwards. Trade Chernyshov and a 1st, get an elite Top pair Rhd under 25 and this rebuild is done.

SJShorky

lol. Meth sure must be a fun drug.

Paul Maul

Moderators, this is incredibly insensitive and even more immature. I know this guy is always toxic in here. Maybe you can do something about it?

SJShorky

Cry moar. 🤣🤣🤣 wait you’re not actually serious with these dumb proposals are you?🤨 that and the fact you’re posting under 2 (moar?) different, but stupidly similar account names? “Paul Mall” and “Pall Mall”? Let me guess this is Middletons, or Cheechoo or Felloooonnn or which ever dumb name is your primary?

Jeff

I would not trade down but grab Henry Brzustewicz with the #30 pick. Or, I would go for Ekblad or Fabbro or both in FA. We’ve got Shakh, Dickinson, and Cagnoni already. Adding any of these is going to bolster us well.

BurnsiesBeard

Blah. Lol, tells me all I need to know about your ability to assess prospects.

kads

I’ve watched a lotta Misa in my Chernyshov highlights. He’s not blah. He’s very very far from blah. 134 points makes blah impossible

mknepper

Not in a million years. Take Misa and move up to get Fiddler.

Joseph

Fans should be excited that a potential first overall pick prefers the Sharks over the Isles. Perception is reality. If players perceive San Jose as a destination with major upside, it will become one.

kads

A lot of those kids know the Sharks young guys personally and they are definitely paying attention. Misa wanting this badly to be here is a great reason to get him here, by the way. Just keep the #2 and see who falls. It’s the most economical decision unless Chicago goes nuts and offers a massive package to move up one spot. It would take a lot for me to move off Misa to a Martone or Frondell/Desnoyers though. Misa is a pretty complete player. All the other guys have shortcomings somewhere or they just don’t do anything as well… Read more »

Joseph

Totally agree. Nothing better than a high end player who wants to be in your org.
