What do the San Jose Sharks have in Michael Eyssimont?

The Mercury News reported today that the Sharks had claimed the Winnipeg Jets forward off waivers.

“He’s a gritty fourth-liner,” an NHL scout from outside the San Jose Sharks organization told San Jose Hockey Now. “Skates well.”

The left-handed 6-foot-0 winger, drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the fifth round of the 2016 NHL Draft, has notched one goal and four assists in 19 games for the Jets this season. The 26-year-old made his NHL debut last year after a breakout AHL campaign that saw him score 18 goals and 24 assists in 58 appearances for the Manitoba Moose.

Another NHL scout sees Eyssimont in much the same way: “He’s competitive, he has some grit and edge to him.”

This scout can also see the high-compete winger helping out on the penalty kill, though not necessarily ahead of the Sharks’ current top PK’ers.

So where will Eyssimont fit in the San Jose Sharks’ line-up?

He should compete with the likes of bottom-six wingers Evgeny Svechnikov, Jonah Gadjovich, Oskar Lindblom, and Noah Gregor for playing time. It’s possible that Eyssimont may prove to be a more reliable depth option than some of these wingers.

“I like the player for what he is,” the scout offered. “He’s not an everyday NHL player but can give you games.”

Are the San Jose Sharks hoping for more than that?

We might see as soon as tomorrow night. Eyssimont is not in Anaheim for tonight’s tilt against the Anaheim Ducks, but perhaps we’ll see him tomorrow against the Boston Bruins.
