SJHN Daily: Still No Timetable for Nutivaara’s Return

Published

on

The San Jose Sharks signed defenseman Markus Nutivaara to help steady the backend, but he isn’t even skating.

“He’s still not anywhere near where we need him to be to get back out there,” David Quinn said after practice Wednesday. “We’re still evaluating [his progress].”

The Finnish defenseman has dealt with injuries for the last two seasons, specifically hip surgery last year. He played in just one regular season game for the Florida Panthers last year and just the first pre-season game for the San Jose Sharks this year.

When Quinn was asked if surgery is a possibility, Quinn said that Nutivaara is going to see another doctor.

“He’s frustrated, but he’s got a good attitude,” Quinn mentioned. “[After two years], you feel so bad for the guy.”

The 2015 seventh-round pick was traded from the Columbus Blue Jackets to the Panthers in Oct. 2020. In two seasons for the Cats, Nutivaara played 31 games out of a total of 138 regular season games.
