The injuries are starting to mount for the San Jose Sharks.

Mario Ferraro has been placed on Injured Reserve, per Sharks PR.

Ferraro did not practice today, along with Erik Karlsson, Alexander Barabanov, Jonah Gadjovich, and James Reimer.

Karlsson and Barabanov were maintenance days, according to head coach David Quinn. Reimer will miss tomorrow night’s contest against the Vancouver Canucks but is expected to be available to travel on the San Jose Sharks’ upcoming road trip.

Quinn, however, wasn’t as sure about Ferraro’s status when I spoke with him at about 1 PM.

“Mario’s not a maintenance day,” Quinn told San Jose Hockey Hockey Now. “He couldn’t practice today.”

At the time, however, Quinn was still trying to get the full report on Ferraro. It must have been bad news, as Ferraro’s placement on IR, retroactive to yesterday’s 5-2 loss to the Los Angeles Kings, means that he’ll miss at least a week of action.

Ferraro’s injury isn’t identified at the moment.

The Sharks have yet to announce a corresponding move to replace Ferraro on the roster.

For what it’s worth, I saw Ferraro walking around the locker room hallway, not looking significantly hobbled. So hopefully, his injury isn’t too long-term.

Ferraro is the San Jose Sharks’ No. 2 defenseman, averaging 22:49 a game, trailing only Erik Karlsson’s 25:15. Karlsson and Ferraro are the only Sharks defensemen currently averaging over 20 minutes a night.

Ferraro appeared to take a full complement of shifts last night, skating 21:05.

The San Jose Sharks did get one good bit of injury news today: Nico Sturm, out since Nov. 19 with a presumed concussion, practiced in full this afternoon.

Sturm still needs to be cleared in advance of tomorrow’s tilt against the Vancouver Canucks, but he said that today was the best that he’s felt since Ryan Carpenter hit him high along the boards.
