San Jose Sharks
SOURCE: Sharks ‘In the Process’ of Signing Chrona
Are the San Jose Sharks about to add a new goaltender?
That’s what it sounds like, according to what San Jose Sharks GM Mike Grier said at tonight’s season ticket holder event.
According to season ticket holder and San Jose Hockey Now subscriber Amy Wirth, and confirmed by other sources, Grier stated that the Sharks are “in the process” of signing University of Denver goaltender Magnus Chrona.
This jibes with a SJHN report from two weeks ago.
“Sounds like Chrona will stick with San Jose,” an NHL scout told SJHN. “He will get an NHL deal [from someone], for sure.”
It sounds like that deal will indeed be with the Sharks.
Chrona’s rights were acquired by the San Jose Sharks during the 2021 Trade Deadline from the Tampa Bay Lightning for journeyman defenseman Fredrik Claesson. The Lightning had drafted the 6-foot-5 goalie in the fifth round of the 2018 Draft.
The 2022 national champion was 22-9-0 with a .916 Save % in his recently-concluded senior season.
Chrona is set to become an unrestricted free agent if he and the Sharks don’t come to a pact by Aug. 15.
If Chrona signs before the end of the San Jose Sharks or San Jose Barracuda seasons, it will be interesting to see where he starts between the NHL or the AHL.
Pending college free agents, take Henry Thrun for example, do have leverage when it comes to their entry-level contracts, so perhaps we will see Chrona with the Sharks sooner than later.
The Sharks’ last game is Apr. 13 in Edmonton. The Barracuda, hoping to still be in the playoff race, end their regular season on Apr. 15 in Tucson.
