What If…Sharks Had Signed John Tavares?

Kyle, Erik, and JD look at the ultimate sliding doors moment for the San Jose Sharks. What if John Tavares had signed with them in the summer of 2018? We look at what the roster was like heading into the summer and their cap situation. Then we try and figure out what the roster would have looked like with Tavares (12:00) and if the Sharks would have won the Stanley Cup (16:00). Then we look at where the San Jose Sharks would now be with Tavares’s contract (22:30) and if they would be in a better position.

Every so often, Wilson can’t resist the ‘lazy’ path of pursuing a high profile player, a ‘game changer’ as he likes to call them. I feel like he thinks landing a high profile player every several years will take care of all that ails a team. But it’s just not a smart strategy in the hard cap era. You made a good call then, but as I’m sure you remember, O’Reilly was a devalued asset on the way out of Buffalo, what with that bizarre exit interview and the drunk driving charge and not being able to raise the Sabres up (not that we can blame him for that) — and while the package that St. Louis ended up sending out was a complete bust for Buffalo, at the time, it looked like an OK package at least then, made up of at least very good middle-six role guys (Berglund/Sobotka) and two high picks and a good prospect.… Read more »
