There was a Jumbo-sized sight at Tech CU Arena this afternoon.

Likely first-ballot Hall of Famer Joe Thornton joined the San Jose Sharks for a Captain’s Skate.

The Sharks usually practice at another rink at Sharks Ice in San Jose, but their normal sheet was reserved for a youth tournament today. So Thornton, along with Logan Couture, Tomas Hertl, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Kaapo Kahkonen, and James Reimer took the San Jose Barracuda’s brand-new ice for perhaps the first time.

Thornton came prepared with his own No. 19 teal helmet. Teal helmets, of course, are one of the distinguishing characteristics of the San Jose Sharks’ new uniforms.

Gasp! Does that mean that Jumbo is returning to the Sharks?

As wonderful a story as that would be – Thornton scored 1,055 of his 1,539 points in teal – I would still consider it unlikely.

But as long as Thornton works out in San Jose Sharks’ gear and wants to hook on with a team for a 25th NHL campaign, I guess the dream isn’t dead.

Corey Masisak of The Athletic noted: “Joe Thornton has been skating off and on with the Sharks since at least Sept. 1…Jumbo and Mario Ferraro were (l think) the first guys to wear teal helmets during a skate.”

It was also The Athletic that noted Thornton and his family had recently moved back to San Jose while the 43-year-old plans his next step.

REPORT: Thornton’s Back in San Jose

So what’s next for Jumbo? One thing for sure, Thornton is getting back into the swing of things in the community!
