Could the San Jose Sharks be gearing up for another trade?

Reportedly, the team is interested in acquiring Dante Fabbro. The 24-year-old defenseman was selected 17th-overall by the Nashville Predators in the 2016 NHL Draft.

Sharks head coach David Quinn knows the 6-foot-0 right-hander well.

In two of Fabbro’s three seasons at Boston University, he was coached by Quinn.

In a recent podcast, Jeff Marek noted, “I had someone say to me yesterday, ‘Don’t be surprised if at the end of the Trade Deadline, Dante Fabbro ends up with his old coach, David Quinn, in San Jose.'”

Since 2018-19, the Preds’ blueliner has 227 games and tallied 12 goals and 56 points.

Before this season and the acquisition of Ryan McDonagh, Fabbro was a top-four blueliner for the Preds. He’s still a staple penalty killer.

“It absolutely makes sense,” Elliotte Friedman replied to Marek. “He’s a player that Nashville has explored moving and it’s a good gamble for San Jose. They are looking for those kind of players. I think it absolutely makes a ton of sense for the Sharks.”

Another Sharks-Fabbro connection is San Jose’s new director of player personnel Scott Fitzgerald.

During the 2016 Draft, the Boston Bruins were unsure who to select with the 14th-overall pick between BU blueliners Fabbro and Charlie McAvoy. Fitzgerald, then of the Bruins, “advocated hard for McAvoy,” which was a deciding factor, according to sources. McAvoy is now a perennial Norris Trophy contender.

Fitzgerald Taking On Unusual Role with Sharks

Fabbro was selected three picks later by Nashville.

The San Jose Sharks have already traded with the Predators under new general manager Mike Grier. That Draft day deal saw John Leonard and a 2023 third-round pick head to Nashville in exchange for Luke Kunin. Perhaps, the two teams could mutually benefit from another trade.
