San Jose Sharks
What I’m Hearing on Day 1 of Free Agency: Sharks Sign Lindblom, Sturm, Nutivaara, Benning

2:50 PM
Correction, got bad info about this:
Grier says Carolina wasn't on Burns's 3-team trade list

2:30 PM
Grier says #SJSharks have signed Nico Sturm, Markus Nutivaara, Matt Benning
— Sheng Peng (@Sheng_Peng) July 13, 2022
1:59 PM
Thought Mattias Janmark could be a fit for the San Jose Sharks — was told no.
1:14 PM
Checking up on Rodrigues, he’s not coming to the Sharks.
1:05 PM
Was reaching because the Sharks need forwards, but Stastny to the Sharks isn’t happening. Forwards going fast though. Kubalik went for what I thought was a bargain rate.
12:39 PM
Burns's conditional pick: The conditional 2023 third-rounder will be the lower of Carolina’s two third round picks (CAR, PHI)
— Sheng Peng (@Sheng_Peng) July 13, 2022
12:30 PM
Picking up a lot of useful info on Lorentz and Makiniemi. One source is really, really high on the goalie, which I’ll share soon. Another source not so much.
11:21 AM
It’s a two-year deal.

Andrew Aggozino heading to #SJSharks.

10:40 AM
I’m told by the way that the market is slow on Jonathan Dahlen right now. Doesn’t mean it can’t pick up fast.
10:28 AM
Hearing San Jose Sharks non-qualified RFA Zach Sawchenko should sign elsewhere today. Good news for you Chunko fans!

ANA signs Frank Vatrano 3x$3.65M

9:56 AM
Source tells me that Sharks haven’t reached out on Colin Miller yet…but with Burns going to Carolina, maybe they should.
9:54 AM
Sharks-Hurricanes trade:
Brent Burns and Lane Pederson for Steven Lorentz, goalie prospect Eetu Makiniemi and a conditional 2023 3rd-round pick. Sharks are retaining 33 percent of Burns contract. @TSNHockey @TheAthletic

9:52 AM
Hearing that the Carolina Hurricanes were on Brent Burns’s three-team trade list. So it doesn’t need his approval at the moment.
9:47 AM
The San Jose Sharks haven’t checked in on Mason Marchment. Might be out of their budgetary range?
9:45 AM
The San Jose Sharks, a source says, “are very interested” in Frank Vatrano. Vatrano was highly-regarded by scouts in my free agency preview:
9:35 AM
I saw a fit with the Sharks and Paul Stastny, but nothing there so far, I think.

Kane Re-Signs With Oilers, but Drama With Sharks Isn’t Over Yet
Vatrano signed with ANA for $3.65Mx3 years. still don’t see him worth over twice the cost of Balcers.
Almost 5 times the AAV actually!
Lindblom signs for $2.5Mx2. used in Philly as a #5-11 F against middle 6 F/bottom pair D comp. his ice time started out last season at 14.4 mins., peaked mid season at 16-ish mins., and ended the season down to 11.5 mins. ATOI.
he’ll get more of an opportunity with this bad Sharks team. seems like that’s a consistent theme with the players the Sharks are picking up for this coming season.
Balcers put up 3 fewer points at almost a mil cheaper.
maybe some of these players didn’t want to buy in to the constant grind low pay when others don’t sacrifice. As you know not a Karlsson fan and I see these guys like Mario, Balcers, Reedy, Magna etc that play hard and get paid diddly squat while Karlsson can’t push anyone out from the net won’t hit anyone won’t sacrifice body to block a shot because he’s so damn fragile. Balcers will get a good deal and probably blossom. I’m worried about Lindblom’s health especially since he’s been vax. I see him on LTIR sometime within a year. Oh well.… Read more »
Lindblom played 79 games last season, so he looks clear of his health problems for now.
Lindblom is a better overall player. Also, Lindblom did not play as much with Philly’s best forwards unlike Balcers (Hertl was RB’s most common linemate)
Stastny’s days at center are over. he’s lost too much speed.
For sure, I saw him at wing
I know it’s not SJ related but what Detroit is doing is pretty exciting to watch for what seem to be intelligent moves. They aren’t going after the biggest names but what appear to be good fits for the price. They’ve still got plenty of cap room but maybe they don’t use too much more of it to allow for extensions to Larkin and Bertuzzi after this year. Detroit seems to be making their big moves this year. They went out and got their 1a goalie in Husso until Sebastian Cossa takes over. Signed Andrew Copp to be their #2… Read more »
Kubalik is a gamble that seems right for the Sharks, good chance of outperforming contract
Sharks sign Nico Sturm for $2M AAV?
Nutivaara and Benning signed as well. Nutivaara is an interesting case coming off a lost season to injury/surgery in FLA. both guys are strong defensively, big D players.
Sturm, ranked 149 out of 210 players in expected goals in the playoffs, yet receives a 2x raise.
I think the bottom 6 is set and hey, options!
Kunin-Bonino-Lindblom
Nieto-Sturm-Viel/Reedy/Weatherby/Gadjovich
Benning 5/6 d man, maybe pk
Nutivaara 5/6 d man, maybe pp
what’s that leave for the top 4 D?
Knyzhov-ek65
Ferraro-???
mev/Nutivaara-Merkley/Benning
for now i have the D as: Ferraro-Karlsson Vlasic-Merkley Nutivaara-Benning Megna F: Meier-Hertl-Barabanov Eklund-Couture-Kunin Lindblom-Bonino-Labanc Nieto-Sturm-Reedy/Gadjovich/Lorentz KL could be traded. Reedy could be sent down to Cuda. depending on Bordeleau’s camp they could put him between 2 of the vets or on wing if they want more skill in the lineup. i’m waiting on Lorentz’ contract to see if they intend to play him on the big club or not. the rest of the new players they definitely intend on playing with the Sharks. i’m really shaky on Bonino as 3C but i’m not sure what they’re going to do… Read more »
Sheng, I saw your tweet regarding Grier saying they were talking about Dylan Strome.
Now that this day is done, when can they sign him if they intend to??
I’d like to see Grier bring both Ryan and Dylan here. Of course, after we make some trades.
Talking about, but only internally I believe
