The San Jose Sharks welcome the Florida Panthers into SAP Center.

Cody Ceci and Will Smith scored, but the Sharks were thrashed 7-2.

Period 1

Opening shift, five attempts to get it in to Florida zone from blueline to blueline, nope, ends with Kunin dumping it in straight to a Panther. Happens, but that’s who the San Jose Sharks want to be, that tough to break in on.

1 in: Ekblad just closed on Celebrini on entry. He and Forsling among will be fun to watch there against the Sharks’ best, their gap control.

3 in: Good start for Sharks, Kunin great net front on Ceci point shot. Kovalenko nice job along wall, where he excels. That line with Wennberg is intriguing. Kunin your net front shooter guy, Kovalenko along the boards, Wennberg the do-everything staple.

4 in: Walman forces stretch pass up the middle to Celebrini. Don’t know if he’s pressing in general, trying to get Sharks out of this funk.

Schmidt goal: Georgiev needs to have that. Vlasic has right clear idea before that, but he needs to be aware of Schmidt, good read by Schmidt to jump up. Right before that, Wennberg had a golden wraparound chance.

They show Vlasic on the jumbotron next stoppage, honoring his 1,300th game. Read the room, guys!

Ceci goal: Nice net front by Cody! Sharks get a much-needed bounce. Ceci with the initial shot-pass that got to Walman off boards, so Ceci essentially passed it to himself for the goal haha.

Smith goal: Granlund stops up Kulikov on the forecheck. Zetterlund sees Ferraro, and Smith pounces on the rebound off end boards.

7 left: Eklund with a big block. If he can get the battle component figured out, I know the spirit is willing, he’ll be some player.

Bennett goal: I can see why they challenged, Greer pitchforked Georgiev some. But before that, Thrun forced an exit pass that was deflected, and chaos. I know a section of the fanbase will watch the goal and see Goodrow and see red, but always watch who missed the more basic play that turned everything upside down. Everyone else was trying to ride the storm after that.

4 left: Celebrini at the end of this penalty kill, about 20 seconds left. I think I’ve said, when will they try him out on the kill? Would be a shot in the arm with his speed and skill. Understand you may not want to risk him blocking shots though. We’ll see if it continues or just end of PK thing. He did get into PK defending structure in these 20 seconds.

Georgiev made a huge save on Greer, a bounce off the draw that went in front to Greer all alone.

Ekblad goal: Vlasic-Thrun on the ice for all goals against. Not blaming them here, just saying. Long shot, Remenda says maybe deflected?

The future is fun! Well, the offense is back for the Sharks at least. You want wins first, but as a fan, you’ll take an offensive, free-wheeling team.

Period 2

Bad Kovalenko turnover pass from wall to DZ center lane. I know that’s an automatic planned exit. But looks awful when no one there for pass.

1 in: Small Granlund play, OZ forecheck, Granlund knows to get in the way of Bennett to allow I think Zetterlund a free shot at the puck. Just small-but-key veteran work.

Greer goal: Ceci point shot gets blocked, and Greer just takes off. Georgiev can’t make the breakaway stop, he’s pulled. One of those games, he wasn’t great, but he also didn’t get help. He made good saves, but you want an extra stop or two too.

Tkachuk goal: Beaut power play tip. Off to side a little, not sure what anyone can do there. Like last game, gut check time for the San Jose Sharks.

6 in: After goal, Warsofsky opts for the fourth line, and through NZ, Duehr makes a really nice play to Goodrow to enter, there’s a 2-on-1…and the puck skips on Goodrow.

9 in: Panthers rolling in zone, Celebrini line and Vlasic-Thrun hemmed in, someone has to make a play…and Vlasic does, puck skips to him, he makes a calm off-the-glass pass that’s easy to collect, Sharks break out, leads to a Vlasic point shot. If his fellow d-men could learn some of his cool under pressure, future of the Sharks would be well served.

9 left: Duehr and Mikkola go at it, thought we might see a fight, we’ll see if at least Duehr a good pest. Sharks need a little rat in their line-up.

Boqvist goal: Forgot about J. Well, Liljegren didn’t, he was pointing at Boqvist, but Celebrini wasn’t looking. Celebrini’s got to lock down the middle there, Liljegren takes the backdoor pass after Eklund gets beats up the ice, so Celebrini has to fill in.

Reinhart goal: Now Ceci can’t exit clean. Florida makes it hard, yes, but gotta make a play.

3 left: Beaut shot-pass from Smith to Granlund.

Period 3

Balinskis with a light punch on Zetterlund, back of the head, Granlund goes up to him.

Balinskis finishes Kovalenko hard, Kunin reaches out with a long swing to engage him, but then goes to bench. This team is looking beat.

4 left: “We want tacos!” chant. All the San Jose Sharks fans are hoping for now. Feels like last year. Fans deserve it after watching this.
