On this episode of the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast, we talk to the star of the Eklund family.
No, we’re not talking about San Jose Sharks first-round pick William Eklund — we’re talking about Swedish TV and YouTube star, and William’s dad — Christian “Fimpen” Eklund.
“Fimpen” — only the government calls him by his Christian name — tells us the hilarious origin of his nickname, which means cigarette butts in Swedish (34:00).
A long-time Swedish hockey pro himself, Fimpen also explains how he and William diverged in their playing styles — think Tie and Max Domi — and what they have in common on the ice (38:00).
We also rooted out Fimpen’s connection with another San Jose Sharks star prospect: Did you know Christian played for Paulin Bordeleau, Thomas’s grandfather? (40:50)
Fimpen then talks about how he fell into being a TV and YouTube star (43:15). Watch his TV work here. And don’t forget to check out his quirky YouTube show, which consists of Swedish NHL’ers like Mika Zibanejad and Marcus Sorensen completing hockey skills challenges…then eating hot dogs.
Fimpen also shares the story behind William’s fascination with Buffalo chicken wings (48:40) and that time William danced to ABBA during the school Christmas show (55:30).
“Actually, we don’t have [Buffalo sauce] here in Sweden,” Eklund said, laughing. “We have chicken wings, but not with that sauce. That’s so strange. So every time we go over [to the US], we want to eat that all the time. I even ordered that sauce online to get shipped to Sweden.”
Also, before our chat with Fimpen, Nick and Sheng talked about the Tomas Hertl rumors (3:30), Doug Wilson’s larger plan with all his big contracts (15:20), Hertl and Evander Kane, and Ivan Chekhovich (24:45).
