BREAKING: Sharks Trade Zetterlund to Senators

Mike Grier has pulled off another Trade Deadline shocker.
After trading the San Jose Sharks’ de facto No. 1 defenseman Jake Walman to the Edmonton Oilers yesterday, Grier has sent popular winger Fabian Zetterlund to the Ottawa Senators.
Bruce Garrioch was the first on the trade and Elliotte Friedman confirmed the details.
Per Friedman, for Zetterlund, prospect Tristen Robins, and a San Jose Sharks’ 2025 fourth-round pick, the Sharks are getting prospect Zack Ostapchuk, Noah Gregor, and Ottawa’s 2025 second-round pick back.
Notably, the 25-year-old Zetterlund was a pending RFA. Originally acquired in the Timo Meier trade in Feb. 2023, Zetterlund has blossomed into a crash-and-bang scoring winger, leading the Sharks with 24 goals last year. He has 17 goals this season.
“They did make us an offer early this year and we chose to wait for after the season. They asked again to talk contract extension, we agreed and countered a few days ago,” Claude Lemieux, Zetterlund’s agent, told San Jose Hockey Now. “I can’t tell you if the trade was the result of the counteroffer or not.”
Ostapchuk was a 2021 second-round pick. The 6-foot-3 winger profiles as a solid checking winger in the NHL.
In 50 games in parts of two seasons with the Senators, Ostapchuk has one goal and four points. With the Belleville Senators, he’s had 19 goals and 39 points in 84 contests.
Ostapchuk’s entry-level contract expires after the 2025-26 season.
Robins was a 2020 second-round pick, a pending RFA who may not have been re-signed.
Meanwhile, San Jose Sharks fans know Gregor well. The 2016 Sharks’ fourth-round pick suited up for 178 games in teal from 2019 to 2023, notching 26 goals and 51 points. The speedy winger has since played for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Sens.
The 26-year-old is an RFA after this year.
