Erik Karlsson joins Swedish hockey royalty, winning the Victoria Prize.

The Victoria Prize, awarded since 1979 in honor of Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden, is given every summer to celebrate the season of a top Swedish athlete or team. Erik Karlsson, coming off a 101-point campaign, the first NHL defenseman since Brian Leetch in 1991-92 to eclipse the century mark, becomes just the sixth ice hockey player to earn the award.

The most recent hockey player to win the award was Henrik Lundqvist in 2016. The other hockey recipients include the Sedin brothers, Peter Forsberg, and Stefan Persson.

The Victoria Prize will be awarded on Jul. 14 in Sweden and Karlsson will be in attendance. By then, Karlsson should also have his third Norris Trophy in hand. Currently, Karlsson is the favorite to win the Norris as the league’s top defenseman according to numerous sports betting sites.

The NHL Awards will be announced on Jun. 26 at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.
