With the 195th overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, the San Jose Sharks added defenseman Eli Barnett. A 6-foot-6, 220-pound defenseman from the BCHL’s Victoria Grizzlies, Barnett contributed three goals and 10 assists in his 53 games in the 2021-22 season. Having played just one season in the BCHL, Barnett is moving on to NCAA hockey for the upcoming season.

Currently committed to the University of Vermont, Barnett has described himself as a “stay-at-home defenseman” but said he can also contribute offensively. He’s been praised for his mobility, especially as a larger player, again, he’s 6-foot-6 as an 18-year-old. The Grizzlies had considered him a “prize recruit” coming into the BCHL.

Barnett was also a high-level youth baseball player before deciding to stick with hockey. It seems like that decision has paid off for the latest member of the San Jose Sharks.

Barnett wasn’t available to the media today, hopefully we’ll see him at San Jose Sharks development camp next week.
