What do the San Jose Sharks have in prospect Cam Lund?
Lund, selected with the No. 34 pick in the 2022 Draft, was signed by the Sharks out of Northeastern on Friday.
The right-handed winger, inked to a three-year entry-level contract that begins in 2024-25, will join San Jose Sharks practice on Monday and make his NHL debut this season, according to head coach Ryan Warsofsky.
Here’s what NHL amateur scouts, none with the Sharks, think of Lund.
Good news, Cam Lund’s tools are very projectable. Not only is he 6-foot-2 and close to 200 pounds, at least as of last development camp, but he’s fast and got a good shot.
“He’s big and talented, size, skating, skill, and shot,” Scout #1 said.
“Like him,” Scout #2 said. “Profiles well with his height, speed, hands, and shot.”
The junior winger just had his best season with the Huskies, posting 18 goals and 40 points. He had 11 goals and 30 points in 2023-24, and seven goals and 23 points in his freshman campaign.
So why isn’t a such a tantalizing physical package more highly-regarded around the NHL?
“Leaves something to be desired in terms of compete and hockey sense,” Scout #1 said.
Scout #2 echoed some of that: “Probably wish he took over more and dominated games.”
Lund, by the way, finished just outside the top-10 of San Jose Hockey Now’s recent post-Trade Deadline ranking of the organization’s prospects.
The talent is there though, for sure. There’s a reason why the San Jose Sharks picked Lund in the high second round, around where they’ve drafted big scoring wingers like Quentin Musty and Igor Chernyshov in recent years.
Lund might be a 20-goal scorer in the NHL one day.
“Has the potential to do that,” Scout #2 said. “Can easily see him as a second or third-line right winger, secondary [scorer].”
