BREAKING: Sharks Draft Goalie Benjamin Gaudreau

Published

on

The San Jose Sharks have drafted Benjamin Gaudreau.

Gaudreau is a 6-foot-2 goalie who was scheduled to play for the Sarnia Sting in 2020-21, but the OHL season was cancelled. However, he starred on Canada’s U18 gold medal winner, also taking home the Goaltender of the Tournament honor.

The San Jose Sharks selected Gaudreau with the 81st pick in the third round.

Per the Elite Prospects 2021 Draft Guide: “Gaudreau is a quick, nimble goaltender….He’s got a more structured technique than a handful of other prospects on this year’s board…signs of a more mature game.”

The San Jose Sharks should make Gaudreau available to the media shortly.

This kid took the net in world juniors. Won best keeper. Could be a gem.

it’s not the Gaudreau is a bad pick, it’s that the trade they made gave Simon Robertsson to the Blues. Robertsson has 30-goal potential as an NHL player. Robertsson being available in the 3rd round was a gift-one that the Sharks gave to STL.

Gaudreau automatically becomes the best goalie prospect in the Sharks pipeline. so, if i sounded too critical of the trade/pick it really just comes down to future net starter vs a top line RW in my view. Sharks obviously wanted a goalie.

goalies in this draft on my list ranked:

  1. Wallstedt (10th overall)
  2. Cossa (20’s)
  3. Gaudreau (50’s)
  4. Lennox (70’s)
  5. Gerasimyuk (90’s)

[…] San Jose: The sleeper pick of the first few rounds: goalie Benjamin Gaudreau. He played just one year of junior hockey but COVID opened the door to play for Team Canada—and he dominated. The San Jose Sharks got a Round 3 steal.  […]
